League Leaders Banbury, breezed into Greens Norton Road assured in themselves of securing another League victory, but their air of confidence was finally dashed by the young Tows side which swept them aside to win the game – leaving the visitors looking red faced.

Banbury started like League Champions and in the first minute breezed past the home side’s cover defence to secure their first try. Bristling with confidence, Banbury continued to move the ball slickly from the breakdown and they looked very capable of over whelming Towcestrians with a big score. However, the younger Tows side dug deep and as they gradually began to ease themselves back into contention, winger Dave Stocks beat his opposite number and found Colt Centre Brandon Kerr in support to race over and level the score. Banbury unsurprisingly countered with a period of sustained pressure which saw them securing two penalties before Tows responded when Aaron Goodman showed superb pace to out strip the Banbury defence and score a try for the home side. Then, a cleaver field kick from Yuill forced Banbury to conceded a 5Metre scrum, and pressure from Tows props Causebrook and Zak Osborne-Wright on their much bigger counterparts forced Banbury to conceded a string of penalties on their own line. Passions were running high and the Tows supporters were calling for a penalty try when Tows No8, Marc Yeates broke from the base of a scrum to score a well deserved try. Banbury looked shaken, and leading into half time as Tows piled on the pressure, James Falvey was unlucky not to collect a Chrissie George cross kick which would have taken Tows further ahead, before the Ref blew leaving Tows 15Pts to 11Pts in front.

Into the second half and Tows were looking the better side and as confidence soared, Dave Stocks gathered his own kick to score a try in a brilliant solo effort and take Tows further ahead. Banbury were desperately trying to find a way through the Tows defence and then after another attempted attack foundered, Goodman was on hand to out pace the Banbury cover defence and score Tows’ 5th try behind the Banbury posts. Yuills conversion put Tows 27Pts to 11Pts in front and this sparked a huge revival by Banbury. Throwing caution to the wind, Banbury went into all out attack running the ball at every opportunity with good effect. First their fly half danced through the Tows defence to score a try and then the visitors right wing got on the score sheet with another try, but with both tries unconverted it was too little too late and Tows had secured a memorable win, inflicting only the second defeat of the season on Banbury

Next week Towcestrians have a difficult Alliance Cup Semi-Final against Bugbrooke RFC on Tuesday evening. Kick Off: 7.00pm. Next Saturday, Tows are at HOME to Lutterworth in their next League match. Kick Off 3.00pm.

HISTORY is made as TOWCESTRIANS FATHER and SON join together in front row contest at AYLESTONE St JAMES

The packed end of season fixture log-jam, with a Lewis Shield match the following day, resulted in the team selection coming unstuck as Tows had to take second place to a committed Jimmies side who were fighting for league survival.

Tows basic errors put themselves under unnecessary pressure early on, conceding a penalty and a converted try. Soon afterwards, during the 10 minutes sin bin for a yellow card to 2nd Row Andy Burley, Jimmies secured a breakaway try to take them 17Pts ahead. Although Tows responded positively with a try from the re-start by Chrissie George, converted by Matt Yuill, the visitors were being taken to task by a committed Jimmies side. The home team showed an all out determination, chasing their kicks and putting in important tackles and outpacing the Tows cover. That said, Tows always looked to have a route back, and after an historical moment for the Towcestrians club Zak Osborne-Wright, already an East Midlands under 20’s player, took the field to join his proud (& beaming) father Paul in the front row, the visitors stepped up the pace, and on the stroke of half time, a try from Marc Yeates just kept them in touch.

However, into the second half, frustrations with the Referee and their own inability to counter effectively led Tows to concede a penalty and territory. Centre Martyn Harvey then slipped over for a try after the Tows forwards had laid the platform for a promising attack, which saw Tows coming back to 22Pts to 19Pts. Nevertheless, after suffering a second Yellow Card Tows laid siege to the Jimmies line, spurning kickable penalties to secure an outright winning try. It was drama to the last after the Tows forwards were brought back by the Ref after seemingly scoring a try, and then Aaron Goodman lost out in a final attempt with a last ditch tackle by his opposite number. In truth Jimmies deserved the win, and Tows rued lost opportunities.

Next week, Towcestrians RFC 1st XV are at HOME against League Leaders Banbury RFC 1st XV. Kick Off: 3.00pm
After looking less assured in recent weeks, Towcestrians sprung back into gear against their near league rivals, Leicester Vipers, reversing a defeat at the hands of the visitors earlier in the season with a much more accomplished performance and a well deserved win.

Playing in front of the home Vice Presidents crowd, Tows young backs soon showed their ability and pace by carving an opening try with winger Aaron Goodman running onto a chip ahead from Martyn Harvey to score under the posts – for Yuill to convert. Vipers responded strongly to come back with a well worked try from their centre before penalties were exchanged between both sides. After a classy dummy from Chrissy George, Capt Marc Yeates then burst over for Yuill to convert and take Tows further ahead. Two further penalties from Yuill suggested that Tows were gradually beginning to take control of the game and half time came with the home side 23Pts to 8Pts up.

Into the second half, and whilst it was the heavier Vipers pack which kept the visitors in the game, it was the Tows backs which always looked capable of scoring. First David Williams scored with a try wide out, and then good handling through the Tows backs released Goodman for his second try. Moving into the final stages Tows held comfortably onto their lead and although the Tows defence were caught out to let the Vipers wing in for a try, Yuill had the final say with a penalty to settle the game. Final score: 36Pts to 13Pts.

Towcestrians were looking to end a disappointing losing streak, and with a high injury list they were forced to travel to Leicester with 4 Colts in their 1st XV selection – only to see the youngsters to the fore as they secured valuable away points with an excellent winning margin.

Towcestrians started the game in full cry and it was Matt Yuill who got the visitors score moving with a penalty. Shortly after, Yuill then cleverly threaded a kick ahead for winger Dave Stocks to pounce on and score. Refreshingly, Tows showed an eagerness missing in recent weeks and it was significant that the Colts players led the way with some sharp attacking play and aggressive defence. This attitude became infectious throughout the side and soon Stocks got his second after a cleaver pass from Marc Yeates. This time Yuill converted from the touchline and Tows were 18Pts ahead. With confidence high, more inventive running from deep in their own half then saw Aaron Goodman on hand to finish a length of the field move. The dependable Yuill slotted the conversion making the half time score Tows 0Pts to 25Pts.

The second half was a different affair, and as the wet conditions began to play a more significant role, the Newtonians pack has seemingly elected to close the game down and seek damage limitation. The game became fractious with tempers being tested on both sides. However, with the game easing into the final quarter, Tows made the game safe when youngsters Nathan Payne and Aaaron Goodman combined to run a quickly taken line-out – leading to Goodman’s second try of the game. Final score 0Pts to 30Pts.

Towcestrians RFC 2nd XV 17Pts vs Luton RFC 2nd XV 0Pts (League)
Disappointingly for Luton, they had two players sent off at the end of this game after losing their discipline.

Towcestrians RFC U18’s Pts vs Bugbrooke RFC U18’s Pts
An excellent win for Tows saw them through to the semi-final of the Referees Cup.

With the end of the season looming and Towcestrians in a comfortable upper mid table League position, it seemed complacency over took the home side at Greens Norton Road, in a lack lustre performance where they were beaten by a side which sit four places below them in the league.

From the kick off, Tows looked flat and out of focus with proceedings as they preferred to ‘stand off’ and admire the abilities of Leicester Forest, allowing them to retain possession long enough for their open side flanker to cross for a converted try. Tows seemed almost disinterested as a misdirected pass was intercepted by Forest to score a second try and see Tows 14Pts behind. This at last seemed to wake Tows up and a spark of enthusiasm at a line out drive saw Eugene Baxter touch down for Matt Yuill to convert. However, any Tows renaissance was short lived as this was countered almost immediately with a charged down kick resulting in a gift try to Forest. Again, Tows responded and livened up proceedings by putting together their best handling move of the game which saw Baxter claim his second try for the home side. Disappointingly, any thoughts of a complete revival were again shattered as Tows conceded field position through very poor tackling which allowed Forest to convert a penalty and ease further ahead. Nearing the end of the half, Tows supporters feared the worst as they were reduced to 14 men with a yellow card to Dan Taylor. Nevertheless, in an all out effort, Tows rallied and Matt Yuill forced his way over in the corner to keep in touch at half time 17Pts to 24Pts.

Into the second half a penalty from Yuill eased Tows closer to Forest. Then with the introduction of Zak Osborne-Wright and Bandon Kerr into the Tows pack, the Tows Colts compliment expand to five players and the tempo of the game immediately picked up. Pressure from the youngsters saw the Forest pack beginning to wane as Tows began to look the more likely to pull off the win. But in conceding a string of penalties down field, Tows were eventually forced back into deep defence and the more mature Forest pack found just enough to drive over for a try from a line out, with the conversion proving too much for Tows to claw back.
