Towcestrians RFC 1st XV 13ts vs Market Harborough RFC 1st XV 15Pts

23rd January 2010

Table topping Market Harborough swaggered into Greens Norton Road confident of another win, and left red faced, knowing that they had secured the narrowest of  victories over an excellent performance from the Towcestrians side.

Within a few minutes of kick off, Harborough had notched a penalty to put them 3Pts up.  In response Towcestrians battered the visitors line and despite stout ‘Boro defence, the home side countered with a well worked try from Matt Yuill who added the conversion – and the gauntlet had been thrown down.  The game swayed from end to end with both packs contesting every phase and admirable attempts from the backs to open the game.  A penalty from Yuill was enough to keep up the Tows momentum, and shortly before half time it was Yuill again, who dropped a superb goal to take Tows 13Pts to 3Pts into the interval.

In the early exchanges of the second half, a series of missed clearance kicks by Tows gave ‘Boro the initiative they had been seeking and after failing to score through their forwards, the ball was spread wide for their right winger to score wide out.  In the worsening conditions, the inexperienced referee visibly struggled to cope with a game which was now becoming more feisty and after reverting to long lectures, a string of yellow cards disrupted this hard fought game.  With the end of the game in sight, confusion reigned as two Towcestrians clearance kicks were brought back into the Tows ‘22’, where ‘Boro players were clearly off-side.  Tows now found themselves being forced backwards and defending desperately on their 5metre line.  As the game entered the 10th minute of injury time, the Tows pack stoically held back the heavier ‘Boro eight at 4 scrums until on the 5 attempt, they committed their second penalty offence for the referee to run under the posts and awarded ‘Boro a penalty try.  The conversion put ‘Boro 2 Pts ahead and whilst the ‘Boro players screamed their delight in relief – the referee still played on.  As the game headed towards 95minutes of playing time, Tows narrowly failed with two long range penalty attempts to present ‘Boro with their ‘get out of jail’ card .
